Railway Requirement | Indian Railways and Other Related Entrance Exams


Indian railways are considered the largest railway network in the world and thousands of employees are recruited every year for the smooth functioning of this network. Indian railways is divided into zones which is further sub divided into divisions. Every division in the railways consists of technical and non technical departments, which forms the basic structure of this network. Technical departments include mechanical, civil, signaling and telecom, etc. The non technical team includes general services such as accounts, railway protection force, personnel management, security, traffic services etc.

All these departments have group A officers who belong to the highest level and group D to the lowest.

Group A: This group consists of officers who are recruited by the UPSC cell. UPSC conducts various examinations like Civil service examination to recruit officers to Indian railway traffic Service (IRTS) and Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS). UPSC also conducts Combined Engineering service examination to recruit Indian railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE), Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS and Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE).

Group B: Group C employees are directly promoted to group B based on experience and performance.

Group C and D: Group C and D posts include assistant station masters, drivers, motormen, guards, signal and mechanical inspectors. Group C employees are recruited through Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). This department has been functioning and the prime recruitment agency which recruits employees for Zonal railways, production units and other extra zonal units of the Indian Railways.

Indian Railways and Other Related Exams Preparation


There are mainly two important Indian Railways Entrance Examinations conducted by the UPSC to recruit officers for the railway sector. They are:

1) Civil services Examination
2) Combined Engineering services examination

Civil services Examination: This examination consists of two successive stages. Civil Services Preliminary examination (objective type) is mainly to select candidates for the main examination or can be considered the screening test. Main examination comprises of a written test followed by a personal interview. All the rounds are elimination rounds. Civil services examination is considered the toughest examinations in India. Thousands of candidates appear for the examination every year and just handful selected.  Civil services examinations needs good preparation and determination. Candidates who clear civil services examination are recruited as Group A officers in Indian railway accounts Service, Indian railway Personnel service, Indian railway Traffic service, etc.

Combined Engineering services examination: This examination is also conducted by the UPSC or the Union public service commission of India and is called Railway Technical examination. Candidates are recruited for four different categories mainly Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. IES examination comprises of two parts or sections. Part 1 is a written examination and consists of objective type questions and conventional papers. Part 2 consists of a personality test which carries 200 marks.
